Making Security Sleek: Simple Tips on Keeping Your System From Being an Eyesore

If you want to implement a camera system for your home or business, you probably don’t want it to be the first thing that people notice. A security solution should be noticeable to effectively deter theft, but not to the point of drawing attention to it, or ruining the aesthetics of your environment. Here are some simple tips to less complicate your system, and also make it easier on the eyes:
Centralize your power: The last thing you want is to have each camera plugged in locally to a wall outlet. Invest in a multichannel power supply and have all of your power running into one box. Doing so will allow your cameras to get all the power they need, in addition to freeing up outlet space (the same rule applies for POE switches). Try running your Cat5 cable into a switch, and have that switch spit out just one cable from the back, and run that into your DVR.
Color coordination: Pay attention to the colors of the surrounding application in which you’re placing the cameras. Make sure that your cables and cameras will not clash with its surroundings. The goal is to complement, not contrast with your environment. Remember that it’s not just security camera installation – to some degree it’s also interior design. As in Feng Shui, every detail counts!
- Going Stealth: For several years and counting, Convert / Nanny Cameras have been a popular choice among residential applications. Is it a smoke detector? Is it a camera? Who knows? I can tell you one thing though: it’ll blend into your home perfectly. Many other options are available as well, including motion sensors, clocks, pens, and much more!
I’ve heard many people turn down the idea of putting in a system due to the sole fact that they didn’t think it would be easy on the eyes. After all, a security system isn’t primarily made to be pretty or attractive – it’s supposed to secure. But follow these simple steps, and hopefully you can strike the perfect balance between style and protection!

Nice post, Tyler. Will it hurt the cameras if you paint them? For instance, I have white cameras, but my building is made of an orange stucco color. Thanks…
This is a very good blog. I enjoyed reading it and I am sure any installer would be happy to have this information as well.
I hate feeling like I’m being watched all the time. These are some good ideas for keeping my property safe without putting in everyone’s face!
Sammy,
From my experiences painting a camera will not hurt or damage it. However, in most cases, doing so will void its warranty so be careful!
